SuSE Linux 8.1/8.2/9.0/9.1 parse.c integer coercion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in SuSE Linux 8.1/8.2/9.0/9.1 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the file parse.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple integer overflows in (1) the xpmParseColors function in parse.c, (2) XpmCreateImageFromXpmImage, (3) CreateXImage, (4) ParsePixels, and (5) ParseAndPutPixels for libXpm before 6.8.1 may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed XPM image file.

The weakness was disclosed 10/20/2004 by Chris Evans as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0688 since 07/13/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15658 (Debian DSA-560-1 : lesstif1-1 - integer and stack overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 95006 (Sun Solaris libXpm Multiple Stack-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 6.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17416), Tenable (15658), SecurityFocus (BID 11196†), Secunia (SA20235†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-8033†). The entries VDB-1440, VDB-1451, VDB-23668 and VDB-23667 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
