A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in phpMyAdmin 2.8.0.1/2.8.0.2/2.8.0.3 (Database Administration Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the file Index.PHP. The manipulation of the argument db with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in phpMyAdmin 2.8.0.x before 2.8.0.4 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the theme parameter in unknown scripts. NOTE: the lang parameter is already covered by CVE-2006-2031.
The weakness was published 05/15/2006 by Sven Vetsch (Disenchant) with Redguard AG (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at phpmyadmin.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-2417 since 05/15/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:Index.PHP it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27394 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : phpMyAdmin (phpMyAdmin-1611)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 2.8.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at phpmyadmin.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
