Linux Kernel up to 2.4.24 bug denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The ELF loader in Linux kernel 2.4 before 2.4.25 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted ELF file with an interpreter with an invalid arch (architecture), which triggers a BUG() when an invalid VMA is unmapped.

The bug was discovered 02/11/2004. The weakness was released 12/31/2004 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0138 since 02/11/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 324 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22609 (Debian DSA-1067-1 : kernel-source-2.4.16 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version bis 2.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (43124), Tenable (22609), SecurityFocus (BID 18174†), OSVDB (45183†) and Secunia (SA20162†).
