A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000/2002/2003/2004 (Presentation Software) and classified as critical. Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft PowerPoint in Microsoft Office 2000 SP3, Office XP SP3, Office 2003 SP1 and SP2, Office 2004 for Mac, and v. X for Mac allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PowerPoint document with a malformed record, which triggers memory corruption.
The weakness was presented 06/13/2006 by Nicolas Ruff, Elia Florio and Dejun Meng with Symantec (Website). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0022 since 11/30/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21724 (MS06-028: Vulnerability in Microsoft PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (916768) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90315 (Vulnerability in Microsoft PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-028)).
Applying the patch MS06-028 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4451.
