A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System). This affects an unknown code of the component JScript Object Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Microsoft JScript 5.1, 5.5, and 5.6 on Windows 2000 SP4, and 5.6 on Windows XP, Server 2003, Windows 98 and Windows Me, will "release objects early" in certain cases, which results in memory corruption and allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was disclosed 06/13/2006 with Microsoft as MS06-023 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-1313 since 03/20/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2308 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21687 (MS06-023: Vulnerability in Microsoft JScript Could Allow Remote Code Execution (917344)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90320 (Microsoft JScript Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-023)).

Applying the patch MS06-023 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4459.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26805), Tenable (21687), SecurityFocus (BID 18359†), OSVDB (26434†) and Secunia (SA20620†).
