Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP Routing/Remote Access Service RPC Request memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Routing/Remote Access Service. The manipulation as part of a RPC Request leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the Routing and Remote Access service (RRAS) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 SP1 and earlier allows remote unauthenticated or authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain crafted "RPC related requests," aka the "RRAS Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered . The weakness was shared 06/13/2006 by Peter Winter-Smith with Microsoft as MS06-025 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2370 since 05/15/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 2 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at securiteam.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13312 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21696 (MS06-025: Vulnerability in Routing and Remote Access Could Allow Remote Code Execution (911280) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90319 (Windows Routing and Remote Access Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-025)).

Applying the patch MS06-025 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6584. In this case the pattern |05 00 00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4453.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26812), Exploit-DB (1965), Tenable (21696), SecurityFocus (BID 18325†) and OSVDB (26437†). The entry VDB-30801 is related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
