A vulnerability was found in Sambar Sambar Server 6.1 (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the file showini.asp. The manipulation of the argument log with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in Sambar Server 6.1 Beta 2 on Windows, and possibly other versions on Linux, when the administrative IP address restrictions have been modified from the default, allow remote authenticated users to read arbitrary files via (1) a "..\" (dot dot backslash) in the file parameter to showini.asp, or (2) an absolute path with drive letter in the log parameter to showlog.asp.

The bug was discovered 06/01/2004. The weakness was shared 05/15/2004 by Oliver Karow (Website). The advisory is shared for download at oliverkarow.de. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-2565 since 11/22/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
