Linux Kernel up to 2.6.11.5 load_elf_library denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The load_elf_library in the Linux kernel before 2.6.11.6 allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel crash) via a crafted ELF library or executable, which causes a free of an invalid pointer.

The bug was discovered 03/29/2005. The weakness was presented 04/01/2005 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-0749 since 03/17/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21923 (CentOS 3 : kernel (CESA-2005:293)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117967 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:293)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.11.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19867), Tenable (21923), SecurityFocus (BID 12935†), OSVDB (15116†) and Secunia (SA14713†). See VDB-947, VDB-945, VDB-946 and VDB-944 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
