A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Exception Handler. The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was published 08/08/2006 by Matt Miller with Leviathan Security Group as MS06-041 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3648 since 07/17/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2364 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Applying the patch MS06-041 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
