Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.11 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple "range checking flaws" in the ISO9660 filesystem handler in Linux 2.6.11 and earlier may allow attackers to cause a denial of service or corrupt memory via a crafted filesystem.
The bug was discovered 03/18/2005. The weakness was disclosed 05/02/2005 by Michal Zalewski as Bug 152532 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0815 since 03/20/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21928 (CentOS 3 / 4 : kernel (CESA-2005:366)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117964 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:366)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (19741), Exploit-DB (25234), Tenable (21928), SecurityFocus (BID 12837†) and OSVDB (14866†).
