Linux Kernel up to 2.4.33.2 SCTP sctp_make_abort_user use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.33.2 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function sctp_make_abort_user of the component SCTP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in the sctp_make_abort_user function in the SCTP implementation in Linux 2.6.x before 2.6.17.10 and 2.4.23 up to 2.4.33 allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) and possibly gain root privileges via unknown attack vectors.

The bug was discovered 08/22/2006. The weakness was disclosed 08/23/2006 by Wei Wang with McAfee (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3745 since 07/20/2006. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65130 (Firefox ESR 17.x < 17.0.4 nsHTMLEditor Use-After-Free), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156246 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0617, ELSA-2006:0689)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 8 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28530), Tenable (65130), SecurityFocus (BID 19666†), OSVDB (28119†) and Secunia (SA21576†). The entries VDB-2256, VDB-2254, VDB-2255 and VDB-2257 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
