A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.33.2 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function sctp_make_abort_user of the component SCTP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Unspecified vulnerability in the sctp_make_abort_user function in the SCTP implementation in Linux 2.6.x before 2.6.17.10 and 2.4.23 up to 2.4.33 allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) and possibly gain root privileges via unknown attack vectors.
The bug was discovered 08/22/2006. The weakness was disclosed 08/23/2006 by Wei Wang with McAfee (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-3745 since 07/20/2006. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 8 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
