A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.2 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Security Check. Multiple "missing security checks" in Firefox before 1.0.3 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary Javascript into privileged pages using the _search target of the Firefox sidebar.
The bug was discovered 04/16/2005. The weakness was presented 05/02/2005 by Kohei Yoshino as Bug 290079 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-1158 since 04/18/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21929 (CentOS 4 : Firefox (CESA-2005:383)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117966 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2005:383)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3475.
