Details
A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk (Communications System) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function Record. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in channels/chan_mgcp.c in MGCP in Asterisk 1.0 through 1.2.10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted audit endpoint (AUEP) response.
The bug was discovered 08/10/2006. The weakness was shared 08/24/2006 by Mu Security with Mu Security research team (Website). The advisory is shared at labs.musecurity.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4345 since 08/24/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22930 (GLSA-200610-15 : Asterisk: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 1.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.digium.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28542), Tenable (22930), SecurityFocus (BID 19683†), OSVDB (28216†) and Secunia (SA21600†). The entries VDB-2488, VDB-31949 and VDB-32896 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
