Details
A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk 1.2.10 (Communications System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function record. The manipulation of the argument CALLERIDNAME with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Asterisk 1.2.10 supports the use of client-controlled variables to determine filenames in the Record function, which allows remote attackers to (1) execute code via format string specifiers or (2) overwrite files via directory traversals involving unspecified vectors, as demonstrated by the CALLERIDNAME variable.
The bug was discovered 08/23/2006. The weakness was shared 08/24/2006 by Mu Security with Mu Security research team (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4346 since 08/24/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22930 (GLSA-200610-15 : Asterisk: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
