The weakness was shared 12/29/2023 by Christoph Wolff and Pascal Zenker with modzero AG as MZ-23-01. It is possible to read the advisory at modzero.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-4466. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
The analyzed devices did not include firmware anti-rollback protection. This allows an attacker with administrative access to roll-back or downgrade the firmware to older versions which might allow the exploitation of previously patched security vulnerabilities. The vendor explains that they do not regard this as a vulnerability as this is a feature that they offer to their customers who have a variety of environmental needs that are met through different firmware builds. To avoid potential roll-back attacks, they remove vulnerable builds from the public servers as a remediation effort.
It is possible to download the exploit at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
