Webmin before 1.296 and Usermin before 1.226 do not properly handle a URL with a null ("%00") character, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS), read CGI program source code, list directories, and possibly execute programs.

The weakness was disclosed 09/01/2006 by Keigo Yamazaki with Little eArth Corporation (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-4542 since 09/05/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22300 (Webmin Null Byte Filtering Information Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11887 (Webmin prior to 1.500 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
