A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function CPathCtl::KeyFrame of the file daxctle.ocx. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in DirectAnimation.PathControl COM object (daxctle.ocx) in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a Spline function call whose first argument specifies a large number of points.
The weakness was disclosed 09/14/2006 by nop (Website). The advisory is available at xsec.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4446 since 08/29/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at xsec.org. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23644 (MS06-067: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (922760)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100038 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS06-067)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 8792. In this case the pattern C46C1BC8-3C52-11D0-9200-848C1D000000 is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4760.
