Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5.0.6 Javascript Regex access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Javascript Regex Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Concurrency vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via multiple Javascript timed events that load a deeply nested XML file, followed by redirecting the browser to another page, which leads to a concurrency failure that causes structures to be freed incorrectly, as demonstrated by (1) ffoxdie and (2) ffoxdie3. NOTE: it has been reported that Netscape 8.1 and K-Meleon 1.0.1 are also affected by ffoxdie. Mozilla confirmed to CVE that ffoxdie and ffoxdie3 trigger the same underlying vulnerability. NOTE: it was later reported that Firefox 2.0 RC2 and 1.5.0.7 are also affected.

The weakness was presented 09/15/2006 by Priit Laes, CanadianGuy, Girts Folkmanis and Catal as MFSA2006-57 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4253 since 08/21/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at lcamtuf.coredump.cx. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22470 (GLSA-200609-19 : Mozilla Firefox: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156230 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2006:0733,ELSA-2006:0675,ELSA-2006:0610)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (28380), Tenable (22470), SecurityFocus (BID 19534†), OSVDB (27975†) and Secunia (SA24711†). See VDB-2544, VDB-2547, VDB-2548 and VDB-2545 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
