Apple QuickTime 7.1.3 embed Tag qtnext Attribute code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.1.3 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation as part of a embed Tag qtnext Attribute leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Apple QuickTime 7.1.3 Player and Plug-In allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code and possibly conduct other attacks via a QuickTime Media Link (QTL) file with an embed XML element and a qtnext parameter that identifies resources outside of the original domain. NOTE: as of 20070912, this issue has been demonstrated by using instances of Components.interfaces.nsILocalFile and Components.interfaces.nsIProcess to execute arbitrary local files within Firefox and possibly Internet Explorer.

The bug was discovered 06/20/2006. The weakness was released 09/21/2006 by pdp with GNUCITIZEN (Website). The advisory is shared at gnucitizen.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4965 since 09/24/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The exploit is available at gnucitizen.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 93 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24761 (QuickTime < 7.1.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115631 (Apple QuickTime Media Link Could Allow Remote Code Execution).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at apple.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 9429. In this case the pattern is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5619.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35178), Exploit-DB (28639), Tenable (24761), SecurityFocus (BID 20138†) and OSVDB (29064†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-2972, VDB-34241, VDB-35413 and VDB-35412. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
