Apple QuickTime up to 7.1.4 integer coercion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.1.4 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. This is going to have an impact on integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.1.5 allows remote user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted QTIF file.

The bug was discovered 03/05/2007. The weakness was disclosed 03/05/2007 by Piotr Bania (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0717 since 02/05/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24762 (Quicktime < 7.1.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115523 (Apple QuickTime Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2007-03-05)).

Upgrading to version 7.1.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (32822), Tenable (24762), SecurityFocus (BID 22827†), OSVDB (33899†) and Secunia (SA24359†). The entries VDB-2561, VDB-2972, VDB-34241 and VDB-35413 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
