A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.1.4 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing. Integer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.1.5 allows remote user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted QTIF file.
The bug was discovered 03/05/2007. The weakness was disclosed 03/05/2007 by Piotr Bania (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0717 since 02/05/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24762 (Quicktime < 7.1.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115523 (Apple QuickTime Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2007-03-05)).
Upgrading to version 7.1.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
