A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.1.4 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.1.5 allows remote user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a QTIF file with a Video Sample Description containing a Color table ID of 0, which triggers memory corruption when QuickTime assumes that a color table exists.

The bug was discovered 03/05/2007. The weakness was presented 03/05/2007 by Ruben Santamarta (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0718 since 02/05/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24762 (Quicktime < 7.1.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115523 (Apple QuickTime Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2007-03-05)).

Upgrading to version 7.1.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11824.
