Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.34-pre4 ATM (Operating System). This issue affects the function clip_mkip of the component ATM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized resource vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-908. The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The clip_mkip function in net/atm/clip.c of the ATM subsystem in Linux kernel allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (panic) via unknown vectors that cause the ATM subsystem to access the memory of socket buffers after they are freed (freed pointer dereference).
The bug was discovered 10/06/2006. The weakness was presented 10/11/2006 by AdLab with Kernel Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4997 since 09/25/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24212 (RHEL 2.1 : kernel (RHSA-2007:0013)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156198 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0710)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org.
