Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16.8 Filesystem path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16.8 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Filesystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in smbfs in Linux 2.6.16 and earlier allows local users to escape chroot restrictions for an SMB-mounted filesystem via "..\\" sequences, a similar vulnerability to CVE-2006-1863.

The bug was discovered 04/24/2006. The weakness was released 04/19/2006 by Marcel Holtmann as Bug 189435 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1864 since 04/19/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 30 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22879 (CentOS 3 : kernel (CESA-2006:0710)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156198 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2006:0710)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26137), Exploit-DB (27766), Tenable (22879), SecurityFocus (BID 17735†) and OSVDB (25067†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-2589, VDB-2603, VDB-2964 and VDB-30400. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
