A vulnerability was found in Novell eDirectory 8.8/8.8.1 (Directory Service Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component NPC over IP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Heap-based buffer overflow in the NCP engine in Novell eDirectory before 8.8.1 FTF1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted NCP over IP packet that causes NCP to read more data than intended.
The bug was discovered 08/16/2006. The weakness was disclosed 10/23/2006 by Joshua J. Drake with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at labs.idefense.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4177 since 08/16/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 68 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38566 (Novell eDirectory Multiple Remote Heap Overflows).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.novell.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29768), SecurityFocus (BID 20664†), OSVDB (29994†), Secunia (SA22506†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017104†).
