A vulnerability was found in Novell eDirectory 8.8/8.8.1 (Directory Service Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function evtfilteredmonitoreventsrequest of the component LDAP Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The evtFilteredMonitorEventsRequest function in the LDAP service in Novell eDirectory before 8.8.1 FTF1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted request containing a value that is larger than the number of objects transmitted, which triggers an invalid free of unallocated memory.
The weakness was disclosed 10/24/2006 by Joshua J. Drake (Website). The advisory is shared for download at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-4510 since 08/31/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38566 (Novell eDirectory Multiple Remote Heap Overflows).
Upgrading to version 8.8.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
