A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Novell eDirectory 8.8/8.8.1 (Directory Service Software). Affected is the function evtFilteredMonitorEventsRequest. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-192. Integer overflow in the evtFilteredMonitorEventsRequest function in the LDAP service in Novell eDirectory before 8.8.1 FTF1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted request.
The bug was discovered 08/17/2006. The weakness was presented 10/23/2006 by Joshua J. Drake with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-4509 since 08/31/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 67 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38566 (Novell eDirectory Multiple Remote Heap Overflows).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.novell.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9015.
