A vulnerability has been found in PostgreSQL up to 8.1.5 (Database Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function UPDATE. The manipulation of the argument MIN/MAX with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. backend/parser/analyze.c in PostgreSQL 8.1.x before 8.1.5 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via certain aggregate functions in an UPDATE statement, which are not properly handled during a "MIN/MAX index optimization."
The weakness was disclosed 10/25/2006 by Josh Drake and Alvaro Herrera (Website). The advisory is shared for download at projects.commandprompt.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-5540 since 10/26/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
