A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL up to 8.1.5 (Database Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function ROLLBACK/COMMIT of the component V3 Protocol Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. backend/parser/analyze.c in PostgreSQL 8.1.x before 8.1.5 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via certain aggregate functions in an UPDATE statement, which are not properly handled during a "MIN/MAX index optimization."
The bug was discovered 10/16/2006. The weakness was presented 10/25/2006 by Sergey Koposov (Website). The advisory is shared at projects.commandprompt.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5540 since 10/26/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67447 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : postgresql (ELSA-2007-0064)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156184 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for PostgreSQL (ELSA-2007:0064)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at projects.commandprompt.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
