PostgreSQL up to 8.1.5 V3 Protocol Message ROLLBACK/COMMIT denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

backend/parser/analyze.c in PostgreSQL 8.1.x before 8.1.5 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via certain aggregate functions in an UPDATE statement, which are not properly handled during a "MIN/MAX index optimization."

The bug was discovered 10/16/2006. The weakness was presented 10/25/2006 by Sergey Koposov (Website). The advisory is shared at projects.commandprompt.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5540 since 10/26/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67447 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : postgresql (ELSA-2007-0064)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156184 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for PostgreSQL (ELSA-2007:0064)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at projects.commandprompt.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (29810), Tenable (67447), SecurityFocus (BID 20717†), OSVDB (30018†) and Secunia (SA22562†).
