The apache2handler SAPI (sapi_apache2.c) in the Apache module (mod_php) for PHP 5.x before 5.1.0 final and 4.4 before 4.4.1 final allows attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) via the session.save_path option in a .htaccess file or VirtualHost.
The bug was discovered 10/24/2005. The weakness was disclosed 10/24/2005 by Eric Romang (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-3319 since 10/27/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17711 (PHP 5.x < 5.1.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115334 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-03-01)).
Upgrading to version sapi_apache2.c) eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
