scikit-learn up to 1.4.x stop_words_ missing access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

There is not any exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in scikit-learn up to 1.4.x. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument stop_words_ with an unknown input leads to a missing access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-921. The product stores sensitive information in a file system or device that does not have built-in access control. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

A sensitive data leakage vulnerability was identified in scikit-learn's TfidfVectorizer, specifically in versions up to and including 1.4.1.post1, which was fixed in version 1.5.0. The vulnerability arises from the unexpected storage of all tokens present in the training data within the `stop_words_` attribute, rather than only storing the subset of tokens required for the TF-IDF technique to function. This behavior leads to the potential leakage of sensitive information, as the `stop_words_` attribute could contain tokens that were meant to be discarded and not stored, such as passwords or keys. The impact of this vulnerability varies based on the nature of the data being processed by the vectorizer.

The advisory is shared for download at huntr.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-5206 since 05/22/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 1.5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 70ca21f106b603b611da73012c9ade7cd8e438b8 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
