A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in vTiger CRM 4.2 (Customer Relationship Management System). This affects an unknown part of the file index.php. The manipulation of the argument action with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in index.php in vTiger CRM 4.2 and earlier allow remote attackers to read or include arbitrary files, an ultimately execute arbitrary PHP code, via .. (dot dot) and null byte ("%00") sequences in the (1) module parameter and (2) action parameter in the Leads module, as also demonstrated by injecting PHP code into log messages and accessing the log file.

The bug was discovered 09/16/2005. The weakness was presented 11/25/2005 by Daniel Fabian with SEC-CONSULT (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-3820 since 11/26/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 70 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
