A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component JavaScript. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by using JavaScript to cause certain errors simultaneously, which results in the access of previously freed memory, aka "Script Error Handling Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 12/12/2006 by Jakob Balle and Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research as MS06-072 (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-5579 since 10/27/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23833 (MS06-072: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (925454)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90371 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS06-072)).
Applying the patch MS06-072 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
