A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component SNMP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the SNMP Service in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, Server 2003, Server 2003 SP1, and possibly other versions allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SNMP packet, aka "SNMP Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 12/12/2006. The weakness was presented 12/12/2006 by Kostya Kortchinsky and Clement Seguy with Google as MS06-074 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-5583 since 10/27/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
The exploit is available at immunitysec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2490 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23837 (MS06-074: Vulnerability in SNMP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (926247)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90372 (SNMP Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS06-074)).
Applying the patch MS06-074 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 13619. In this case the pattern 0 is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8610.
