A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.8/2.0 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown part of the component javascript URI Handler. The manipulation of the argument src with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Mozilla Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.1, 1.5.x before 1.5.0.9, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.9, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.7 allows remote attackers to bypass cross-site scripting (XSS) protection by changing the src attribute of an IMG element to a javascript: URI.
The weakness was published 12/19/2006 by Vladimir Vukicevic (moz_bug_r_a4) as MFSA2006-72 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-6503 since 12/13/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23942 (CentOS 4 : Firefox (CESA-2006:0758)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156235 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2006:0758)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9089.
