A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.8/2.0 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component SVG Image Handler. Mozilla Firefox 2.x before 2.0.0.1, 1.5.x before 1.5.0.9, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by appending an SVG comment DOM node to another type of document, which triggers memory corruption.
The weakness was released 12/19/2006 by Vladimir Vukicevic (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2006-69 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-6504 since 12/13/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23942 (CentOS 4 : Firefox (CESA-2006:0758)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156235 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2006:0758)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mozilla.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4867.
