Oracle Database up to 10g EmChartBean path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Oracle Database up to 10g. This vulnerability affects the function EmChartBean. Performing a manipulation results in path traversal. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2007-0222. There is not any exploit available. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Oracle Database up to 10g (Database Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function EmChartBean. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the EmChartBean server side component for Oracle Application Server 10g allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via unknown vectors, probably "\.." sequences in the beanId parameter. NOTE: this is likely a duplicate of another CVE that Oracle addressed in CPU Jan 2007, but due to lack of details by Oracle, it is unclear which BugID this issue is associated with, so the other CVE cannot be determined. Possibilities include EM02 (CVE-2007-0292) or EM05 (CVE-2007-0293).

The bug was discovered 08/22/2006. The weakness was released 01/17/2007 by Oliver Karow with Symantec (Website). The advisory is shared at red-database-security.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-0222 since 01/12/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 147 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5077.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31572), SecurityFocus (BID 22027†), OSVDB (32879†), Secunia (SA23794†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017522†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-2839, VDB-2840, VDB-2838 and VDB-34452. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
