Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.14 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file netfilter/ip_nat_helper_pptp.c of the component PPTP NAT Helper. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
ip_nat_pptp in the PPTP NAT helper (netfilter/ip_nat_helper_pptp.c) in Linux kernel 2.6.14, and other versions, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption or crash) via an inbound PPTP_IN_CALL_REQUEST packet that causes a null pointer to be used in an offset calculation.
The bug was discovered 01/16/2006. The weakness was shared 01/23/2006 (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-0036 since 12/20/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/25/2025).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 88 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115318 (Linux Kernel Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
