Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.14 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown function of the file netfilter/ip_nat_helper_pptp.c of the component PPTP NAT Helper. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
ip_nat_pptp in the PPTP NAT helper (netfilter/ip_nat_helper_pptp.c) in Linux kernel 2.6.14, and other versions, allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory corruption or crash) via a crafted outbound packet that causes an incorrect offset to be calculated from pointer arithmetic when non-linear SKBs (socket buffers) are used.
The bug was discovered 01/16/2006. The weakness was published 01/23/2006 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-0037 since 12/20/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 88 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115318 (Linux Kernel Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
