Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Sun Sendmail up to 8.12.9 (Mail Server Software). Affected is the function prescan of the file parseaddr.c of the component Sendmail. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability (EarlyShovel). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The prescan function in Sendmail 8.12.9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via buffer overflow attacks, as demonstrated using the parseaddr function in parseaddr.c.
The bug was discovered 09/17/2003. The weakness was presented 09/17/2003 by Michal Zalewski (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.netsys.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-0694 since 08/14/2003. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published 9 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.nl. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13808 (SUSE-SA:2003:040: sendmail, sendmail-tls), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 50080 (Sendmail Prescan() Variant Remote Buffer Overrun Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 8.12.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sendmail.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 654. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2384.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13204), Tenable (13808), SecurityFocus (BID 8641†), OSVDB (2577†) and Secunia (SA9758†).
