A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mambo 4.5.3h (Content Management System). This vulnerability affects the function _settemplate of the file mambo.php. The manipulation of the argument mos_change_template with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the _setTemplate function in Mambo 4.5.3, 4.5.3h, and possibly earlier versions allows remote attackers to read and include arbitrary files via the mos_change_template parameter. NOTE: CVE-2006-1794 has been assigned to the SQL injection vector.
The bug was discovered 02/22/2006. The weakness was disclosed 02/22/2006 by James Bercegay with Gulftech (Website). The advisory is available at source.mambo-foundation.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0871 since 02/24/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely.
