Safari in Mac OS X 10.3 before 10.3.9 and 10.4 before 10.4.5 allows remote attackers to redirect users to local files and execute arbitrary JavaScript via unspecified vectors involving HTTP redirection to local resources.
The bug was discovered 03/01/2006. The weakness was published 03/03/2006 by Ilja van Sprundel (iDefense) with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0388 since 01/24/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20990 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115334 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-03-01)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4261.
