A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing of the file navcancl.htm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 on Windows XP and Vista allows remote attackers to conduct phishing attacks and possibly execute arbitrary code via a res: URI to navcancl.htm with an arbitrary URL as an argument, which displays the URL in the location bar of the "Navigation Canceled" page and injects the script into the "Refresh the page" link, aka Navigation Cancel Page Spoofing Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was released 03/21/2007 by Aviv Raff (Website). The advisory is shared at aviv.raffon.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-1499 since 03/17/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 596 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:navcancl.htm it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25486 (MS07-033: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (933566)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100047 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS07-033)).
The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12014. In this case the pattern about|3A|cancel|23| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5407.
