A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 7 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Language Packet Installation. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and 6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by instantiating certain COM objects from Urlmon.dll, which triggers memory corruption during a call to the IObjectSafety function.
The weakness was presented 06/12/2007 by Tom Cross with ZDI as MS07-033 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-0218 since 01/12/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25486 (MS07-033: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (933566)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100047 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS07-033)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-033 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5109.
