A vulnerability was found in EMC Retrospect 6.5/7.0/7.5. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the file retrospect.exe of the component File Permission. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. EMC Retrospect for Windows 6.5 before 6.5.382, 7.0 before 7.0.344, and 7.5 before 7.5.1.105 allows local users to execute arbitrary code by replacing the Retrospect.exe file, possibly due to improper file permissions.
The bug was discovered 04/17/2006. The weakness was presented 05/03/2006 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2155 since 05/03/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version 6.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
