Microsoft Windows 98/ME Rendering Engine polypolygon numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the PolyPolygon function in Graphics Rendering Engine on Microsoft Windows 98 and Me allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Windows Metafile (WMF) or EMF image with a sum of entries in the vertext counts array and number of polygons that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The issue has been introduced in 06/25/1998. The weakness was shared 06/13/2006 by Peter Ferrie with Symantec (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-2376 since 05/15/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2910 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4052.
