Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 5.01 ActiveX Control memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 5.01 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4 and 6 SP1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via "unexpected data" related to "parameter validation" in the DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Light ActiveX control, which causes Internet Explorer to crash in a way that enables the code execution.

The weakness was presented 06/13/2006 by Will Dormann and Dan Plakosh (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2383. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21685 (MS06-021: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (916281)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100035 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer Missing (MS06-021)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6516. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4461.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26768), Tenable (21685), SecurityFocus (BID 18303†), OSVDB (26444†) and Secunia (SA20595†).
