A vulnerability was found in WordPress 2.1.3 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file admin-ajax.php. The manipulation of the argument cookie with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. SQL injection vulnerability in wp-admin/admin-ajax.php in WordPress before 2.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the cookie parameter.
The bug was discovered . The weakness was disclosed 05/21/2007 by Janek Wind with waraxe (Website). The advisory is shared for download at waraxe.us. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-2821 since 05/22/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
A public exploit has been developed by waraxe and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13654 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. By approaching the search of inurl:admin-ajax.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25291 (WordPress check_ajax_referer() Function SQL Injection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at wordpress.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5413.
