A vulnerability was found in Sun StarOffice Office Suite up to 8.x (Office Suite Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component FreeType Font Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Heap-based buffer overflow in OpenOffice.org (OOo) 2.2.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a RTF file with a crafted prtdata tag with a length parameter inconsistency, which causes vtable entries to be overwritten.
The bug was discovered 06/12/2007. The weakness was published 06/18/2007 by Victor Stinner (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0245 since 01/16/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67513 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : openoffice.org (ELSA-2007-0406)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117521 (CentOS Security Update for OpenOffice.org (CESA-2007:0406)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9123.
