The weakness was disclosed 07/10/2007 by Jim Hoagland Ollie Whitehouse with Symantec (Website). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-3038 since 06/05/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25689 (MS07-038: Vulnerability in Windows Vista Firewall Could Allow Information Disclosure (935807)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90402 (Windows Vista Firewall Could Allow Information Disclosure (MS07-038)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-038 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
