The manipulation as part of a LDAP Query leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The LDAP service in Windows Active Directory in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP4, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Server 2003 x64 Edition and SP2, and Server 2003 for Itanium-based Systems SP1 and SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted LDAP request with an unspecified number of "convertible attributes."
The bug was discovered 07/10/2007. The weakness was presented 07/10/2007 by Neel Mehta (ERNE) with Microsoft as MS07-039 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0040 since 01/03/2007. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25699 (MS07-039: Vulnerability in Windows Active Directory Could Allow Remote Code Execution (926122) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90403 (Windows Active Directory Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-039)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
